Retina
The layer of tissue that lines the inner part of the eye. The retina
converts images from the eye's optical system into electrical impulses that
are sent along the optic nerve to the brain, to interpret as vision.
The retina contains photoreceptor cells called rods and cones. Rods
are primarily located in the peripheral areas of the retina and are sensitive
to dim light, to movement, and to shapes (they give information about
where an object is). Cones are located in the macula area of the retina
and are sensitive to bright light, detail and colour (they give information
about what an object is).
