Disease: Retinitis Pigmentosa
Condition: Degeneration of the photoreceptor cells of the retina
Etiology (cause):
· Cause is unknown
· Most often is hereditary
Portion(s) of anatomy affected:
· Retina
Category of Vision Loss:
· Decreased visual acuity
· Field loss (especially peripheral)
Resulting effect on vision:
1. Tunnel vision
2. Night blindness
3. Decreased depth perception
4. Spotty vision (retinal scarring)
5. Photophobia (light sensitivity)
6. Can develop cataracts, myopia, vitreous opacities, cataracts, or keratoconus)
7. Total blindness can occur
8. Difficulty adapting when going from bright to dark environment
Examples of potential situations where decreased visual function may occur:
1. Physical activities and mobility may be restricted by low light situations such as
bad weather and night time
2. Students may need to be seated farther away to increase their visual field.
3. It may be difficult for individuals when leaving a theater in the day time, and
adjusting to outside lighting.
4. It may be difficult to walk down steps during daylight and dim light
5. It may be difficult to recognize faces from across the street
