¤Functional Vision Worksheet¤
Disease: Retinopathy of Prematurity
Condition: Decreased retinal blood vessel development in premature infants (can
lead to bleeding, scarring, and retinal detachment)
Etiology (cause):
· Low birth weight (< 3 pounds)
· Early gestational age (< 32 weeks)
· Duration and administration of oxygen
· A hole or tear in the retina
Portion(s) of anatomy affected:
· Retina
Category of Vision Loss:
· Decreased visual acuity
· Field loss
Resulting effect on vision:
1. Spotty vision
2. Possible blindness
3. Can cause:
a. Myopia (nearsightedness)
b. Strabismus (crossed eyes)
c. Amblyopia (lazy eye)
d. Glaucoma
e. Nystagmus
f. Cataract
4. Flashing lights in vision (result of retinal detachment)
5. Floaters (result of retinal detachment)
6. Shadows in peripheral vision (result of retinal detachment)
Examples of potential situations where decreased visual function may occur:
1. An individual may have blind areas in their field of vision. It may take longer for
a student to view the same image as another student.
2. A student may be completely blind with no light perception. This will make it
difficult to discern what time of day it is.
3. It may be difficult for students to view work up close. Magnification should be
used.
4. It may be difficult for student to view images from a distance, telescopes can be
used.
